Salvatore completed his training in dietetics and nutrition at Sapienza – University of Rome, Italy. He then completed a Master of Science in Molecular and Nutritional Biology at the University of Urbino Carlo Bo, Italy. He worked as clinical dietitian at Sapienza – University of Rome where he is an adjunct faculty for teaching online courses on clinical dietetics and nutrition, with a major focus on the effects of diet and nutrition on diabetes and on the cardiovascular system.

Salvatore joined the VCU Pauley Heart Center in 2013 and joined the Faculty as Research Assistant in 2015 and then as Research Instructor of Medicine in 2016. He is part of a cardiology translational multidisciplinary research team led by Dr. Antonio Abbate, which includes basic scientists and clinicians, with the final goal of translating finding in the laboratory to the patient.

Salvatore dedicates part of his time to the basic science laboratory, trying to understand the effects of different diets and nutrition on metabolism and on cardiac function, with a major focus on obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart failure.

Particularly, he is investigating how diets with similar calories, but different composition in terms of micro- and macro-nutrients (i.e., carbohydrates, lipids and proteins), affect metabolic control and cardiac function in the mouse. Moreover, he is exploring the potential molecular mechanism and potential therapeutic strategies involved in the cardiac dysfunction induced by a diet rich in sugars and saturated fat, with a focus on the potential deleterious pro-inflammatory properties of the Western diet.

Salvatore also works in the clinical research setting. Particularly, he is investigating the role of anti-diabetic medications (i.e., SGLT2 inhibitors) on exercise tolerance in patients with heart failure, for which he has recently received a Clinical Mentored and Population Research Award from the American Heart Association for two years.

He is also involved in several clinical trials sponsored by the National Institute of Health and the American Heart Association, which are ongoing under the Division of Cardiology.

Salvatore is a member of the American Heart Association, European Society of Cardiology, American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, European Society of Preventive Medicine, European Federation of the Associations of Dietitians and associate member of the American Society for Nutrition.

He is member of the Editorial Board of Immunoendocrinology, and peer reviewer for other journals such as PLOSONE, Metabolism, BMC Cardiovascular Disorders and Journal of Human Nutrition and Food Science.

Salvatore has co-authored a book for Sapienza University of Rome on the role of nutritional assessment in the elderly, and authored a chapter on Dietary recommendations in the healthy population.

From 2015 he also serves as Full Member for the Virginia Commonwealth University Institutional Review Board, and from 2016 as Abstract Reviewer for the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.
