Antonio AbbateAntonio Abbate, MD, PhD

Interim Director of Clinical Research
Antonio joined the VCU Pauley Heart Center as faculty in 2007. He serves as principal investigator in several clinical and translational studies in AMI and heart failure, sponsored by the National Institute of Health, the American Heart Association, and various Industry partners.

Amy ladd Amy Ladd, PhD
Research Scientist / Regulatory Research Coordinator


Amy joined the Pauley Heart Center in March 2015. She has received a PhD in Pathology and completed Post-Doc training in the Molecular Diagnostics at VCU. She is experienced in translational research in cancer and neurology, and contributed to establishing the VCU tissue repository. She also serves as vice-chair of the VCU-IRB panel D.

laura CeiLaura Cei, LPN, CCRP
Clinical Research Nurse Coordinator


Laura has worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse for 13 years and as a clinical research assistant for 2 years, prior to joining the VCU Pauley Heart Center.  Laura now serves as primary coordinator in a variety of clinical trials, primarily in heart failure research. She is currently enrolled at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences completing a degree in Clinical Research Administration.
Melissa Sears Melissa Sears, RN, BSN
Clinical Research Nurse Coordinator

Melissa has worked 3 years as a registered nurse in the ICU, and completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, prior to joining the VCU Pauley Heart Center 4 years ago. She now serves as primary coordinator for multiple clinical trials in the primary therapeutic areas of acute coronary syndromes and heart failure.
Laura Johnson Laura Johnson, BSN, RN
Clinical Research Nurse Coordinator

Laura joined the VCU Pauley Heart Center in 2016. She received her BSN from VCU School of Nursing and a B.S. in Health Services Administration from JMU, and has previously worked in both clinical and administrative roles at VCU. She is experienced in coordinating interventional studies for CAD, myocardial infarction and peripheral vascular disease.
Salvatore Carbone MSSalvatore Carbone, MS
Instructor of Medicine, Nutritionist


Salvatore received his degree in Dietetics and a Master of Science in Molecular and Nutritional Biology. He worked as a Clinical Dietitian in Italy in Diabetes and joined the VCU Pauley Heart Center in 2013. His work focuses on the role of body composition and different diets in the development and progression of cardiac and metabolic disease and on the effects of SGLT2 inhibitors in diabetic patients with heart failure.
Justin Canada, MS, RCEPJustin Canada, MS, RECP
Exercise Physiologist and PhD student in Kinesiology


Justin is a registered clinical exercise physiologist (RCEP) through the American College of Sports Medicine. He received his Masters degree in exercise physiology from VCU. He specializes in advanced clinical exercise testing in high-risk populations and in those with unexplained exertional intolerance.
Dinesh KadariyaDinesh Kadariya, MD
Post-Doctoral Research Fellow


Dinesh obtained his medical degree from Nalanda Medical college, India. He completed his internal medicine residency at Montefiore Medical Center, NY. He has been working as a hospitalist at VCUHS since 2015. He has started a research fellowship to explore the treatment options of DM in heart failure patients.
Benjamin Van TassellBenjamin Van Tassell, PharmD
Associate Professor of Pharmacotherapy


Benjamin joined the VCU faculty in 2008. He completed post-doctoral training in heart failure pharmacotherapy and research at the University of Utah. Together with Dr. Abbate, he serves as a principal investigator in several clinical and translational studies in AMI and heart failure, sponsored by the National Institute of Health and the American Heart Association.

Leo Buckley III, PharmDLeo Buckley III, PharmD
Senior Post-Doctoral Research Fellow


Leo joined the VCU research team in 2015. He completed his pharmacy education at Northeastern University in 2013 and recently completed a 2-yr clinical residency training in cardiology at the Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, MA. He is now enrolled in a 2-yr research fellowship at VCU to explore novel treatments for heart attack and heart failure.
Hayley Billingsley, RDHayley Billingsley, RD,
Research Assistant


Hayley is a registered dietitian. She received her bachelors of science from Virginia Tech in Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise and recently completed her dietetic internship at VCU Health. She is involved in the clinical trials exploring the role of SGLT2 inhibitors in diabetic patients with heart failure, and the role of different diets in the development and progression of cardiac and metabolic disease.
Dave DixonDave Dixon, PharmD
Associate Professor of Pharmacotherapy


Dave received his pharmacy training at Campbell University in Dunn, NC. Prior to joining the VCU faculty in 2012, he managed anticoagulation and arrhythmia clinics for patients at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He is a current fellow of the National Lipid Association and Social Media Editor for iForumRx.org.
Stefano ToldoStefano Toldo, PhD
Assistant Professor of Medicine


Stefano obtained his PhD from the Catholic University of Rome, Italy and joined the VCU Pauley Heart Center in 2009 as post-doctoral fellow, and faculty in 2015. He is a molecular biologist and a skilled small animal surgeon. He has been supported by AHA and Industry funds. His research focuses on AMI, heart failure, inflammation, cardioprotection, and diabetes.
Eleonora Mezzaroma, PhDEleonora Mezzaroma, PhD Instructor, School of Pharmacy

Eleonora joined the Translational Research team in 2010, as a post-doctoral associate, and was promoted to Faculty in 2014. She focuses on cardiac effects of cancer therapy and the role of inflammation. She has been supported by an AHA post-doctoral grant and now by an National Cancer Institute grant.
Carlo Marchetti, PhDCarlo Marchetti, PhD
Research Associate (2011-2015)


Carlo obtained his MS and PhD from the University of Rome, Italy. He joined the VCU Pauley Heart Center in 2011, and completed research on the mechanisms of inflammation, and developing novel NLRP3 inflammasome inhibitor. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=marchetti-c+AND+nlrp3 He is now completing a post-doctoral training at the University of Colorado, Denver, under the guidance of Prof. Charles Dinarello.



Adolfo Gabriele MauroAdolfo Gabriele Mauro, MS
Associate


Gabriele joined the VCU Pauley Heart Center in 2014 after completing a MS at University of Parma, Italy. He is involved in translational research in heart failure, transplant, and cardiac toxicity. He is skilled in histology and pathology.

Juan Valle Raleigh, MD Juan Valle Raleigh, MD
Research Associate (2014-2015)


Juan is a Cardiologist from Buenos Aires, Argentina. He joined the VCU Research Team in 2014, under the guidance of Dr. Salloum. He completed research on the mechanisms of serelaxin as cardioprotective agent. He is now completing a Clinical Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology in the Hospital Italiano, Buenos Aires, Argentina.





Claudia Oddi Claudia Oddi, BSN, MSN
Clinical Research Coordinator (2011-2015)


Claudia joined the VCU Pauley Heart Center as a research coordinator in 2011 and has worked as primary coordinator for several NIH and AHA sponsored studies. She has a Bachelor in Science –Nursing and a Master of Science in Nursing Administration. She has also served as a member of the VCU IRB for 4 years.
Cory Trankle, MDCory Trankle, MD
Research Fellow (2015-2016)


Cory obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. He is completed the Internal Medicine Residency at VCU from 2012 to 2015 and then started a research fellowship before ultimately pursuing cardiology fellowship training.
Sofanit Dessie, MDSofanit Dessie, MD
Research Assistant (2015)


Sofanit graduated from medical school in Ethiopia and is currently preparing to apply for 2017 medical residency. She joined the VCU Pauley Heart Center as cardiac monitor technician in telemetry surveillance unit prior to joining the research team in 2016, where she served as research coordinator for multiple clinical trials, mainly in acute myocardial infarction and heart failure.
