Anthony J. Minisi, MD
A Philadelphia native, Dr. Minisi received his undergraduate (cum laude) and medical degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He then completed his internal medicine and cardiology training at the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University. In addition to a clinical fellowship, Dr. Minisi completed a research fellowship in cardiology through a National Institutes of Health Training Grant at the McGuire V.A. Medical Center. He joined the VCU Cardiology staff in 1983 as clinical instructor and achieved the rank of associate professor in 1995 and professor in 2004. In addition to serving as associate chief of cardiology at the V.A. Medical Center, Dr. Minisi is former director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the V.A. and current director of the Cardiology Fellowship Training Program.
Dr. Minisi’s research interests involve the neural control of the cardiovascular system by the autonomic nervous system. He has authored or co-authored more than 25 papers, 40 abstracts and several book chapters and has secured a number of external grants from both federal and private sources since joining the faculty. Among his research activities, Dr. Minisi is a former study section member of the NASA/Universities Space Research Association as well as past Ad Hoc Reviewer for the American Journal of Physiology and the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
Dr. Minisi is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association Council on Circulation and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions and the American Federation for Medical Research. An outstanding educator, Dr. Minisi has won the Best Faculty Teaching Award from the medical housestaff as well as his medical students and cardiovascular diseases fellows a number of times. He currently serves as member of the VCU/MCV Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and the Division’s Executive Committee as well as chairman of the Institutional Review Board at the McGuire V.A. Medical Center.
