Dr. Kontos is Director of the Pauley Heart Center’s Coronary Intensive Care Unit.
A Richmond native, Dr. Kontos completed his medical degree in 1988 at the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he continued on to finish his internal medicine and cardiology training. After completing a second fellowship in echocardiography at VCU, Dr. Kontos joined the university’s faculty as Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine/Cardiology in 1995. A year later he added a joint appointment in emergency medicine. Since 1998, he also has served as associate director of Acute Cardiac Care.
Among his many honors, Dr. Kontos has won a research award from the American Heart Association, Virginia affiliate, in 1992-93 for his investigation of oxygen free radicals, ischemia/reperfusion, and gene expression of heat shock proteins. He also has won several awards at state and national meetings, including the Virginia American College of Cardiology, the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Physicians and the National Young Investigators Meeting. A fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Kontos also is an associate member of the American College of Cardiology, and a member of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, the American Society of Echocardiography and the Society of Chest Pain Centers and Providers. At the MCV Campus, he currently sits on the Acute Cardiac Care Team Committee and the Credentialing Committee.
Dr. Kontos has served as co-investigator on 12 clinical investigations and has published 47 research papers, more than 70 abstracts and eight book chapters and monographs. In addition to serving as scientific session co-chair at two separate American College of Cardiology national meetings, Dr. Kontos has made a number of oral presentations at national meetings. He has been an invited presenter at a variety of venues, including statewide grand rounds, national meetings and medical centers around the state and country. Dr. Kontos has served as reviewer for 16 highly respected journals in cardiology and emergency medicine.
