Dr. Walter H. J. Paulsen joined the Pauley Heart Center faculty 1980 and achieved the rank of associate professor of internal medicine (cardiology) in 1987. He specializes in noninvasive cardiology for the diagnosis and management of heart disease, and is the director of the Adult Disease Clinic on the MCV Campus.
Dr. Paulsen’s research and clinical interests include echocardiography, valve disease and congenital cardiac disease in adults. He is author or co-author of more than 50 research papers and abstracts published in leading medical journals. Dr. Paulsen is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Royal College of Physicians (Canada) and is a member of numerous scientific, honorary and professional societies.
A native of Uganda, Dr. Paulsen attended the Makerere University Medical School in his hometown of Kampala, Uganda, and received his medical degree (M.B., Ch.B.) in 1969. After completing his internship at Mulago Hospital in Kampala, he served as general medical officer at Kabale District Hospital in Uganda and senior house officer in internal medicine at University Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia. Dr. Paulsen then immigrated to Canada, where he did his residency and cardiology training at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. He completed a research fellowship in cardiology, funded by the Ontario Heart Foundation, at London, Ontario’s University Hospital.
